How to Create Label Templates in Retail Force Barcodes and Labels

Creating custom labels for your retail business is an essential task especially for managing inventory and ensuring smooth product tracking. Retail Force, a Shopify app, provides an intuitive interface that enables store owners to design and print barcode labels, SKU tags and other product identifiers. In this article, our app development team will guide you through the process of selecting and creating label templates using the Retail Force app.

What are Label Templates?

Label Templates are pre-designed or customizable formats used for creating product labels, barcode tags and other types of identification labels. In a retail or e-commerce business, these templates help in standardizing the appearance of labels across various products, making it easier to manage inventory, track sales and maintain organization.

Why Are Label Templates Important?

Consistency: Using label templates ensures that all your product labels follow a uniform design which is important for both in-store and online shopping experiences.

Time-saving: Templates allow you to generate barcodes and labels quickly especially when working with a large inventory.

Professional Appearance: Customizable templates help create professional and branded labels that enhance your business's image.

Easy Printing: Once you have created or selected a label template, it can be printed directly onto labels for barcodes, product identifiers or packaging.

When you enter the Retail Force app, you will see several options on the left sidebar, including:

  • Barcode & SKUs: Here, you can manage all your barcode and SKU-related information.
  • Label Templates: This is where you’ll create, modify, and select label templates.
  • Print Labels: This option lets you print the labels you have designed.
  • Settings: This is where you manage app preferences.

The Label Templates section is where the magic happens, allowing you to create and customize your own label templates based on your business needs.

Step 1: Access the Label Templates Section

Click on Label Templates under the Retail Force Barcode & SKUs section. This will take you to the section from where you can select or create label templates. Once you click on New Template, you will be directed to a new section that contains six important areas for customizing your label:

  1. Overview
  2. Label Setup
  3. Paper Setup
  4. Language Setup
  5. Attributes
  6. Barcode/QR

Step 2: Choose Your Paper Brand and Model

One of the first steps in the label creation process is selecting the paper for your labels. You have two main options:

  • Select the Paper Brand & Model: If you know the brand and model of the label paper you are using, you can select it from the dropdown menu that includes popular options like Zebra, Dymo, Avery (Standard, A4/A5, US Letter), Brother, Betckey, Arch Crown, BarcodeFactory, Ecotherm and more. Retail Force supports a wide range of paper brands and models.
  • Enter Dimensions Manually: For custom paper sizes or when a specific paper model is unavailable, you can input the label dimensions in inches. This feature provides full flexibility in designing your label layout. After entering the dimensions, this app intelligently recommends the most suitable templates based on your input.

Step 3: Label Setup

Label Setup feature in the Retail Force Barcodes & Labels app allows users to fine-tune the layout of their barcode labels by adjusting the label margins from top, bottom, left and right in inches. This ensures that the barcode and other label elements are properly positioned and not cut off during printing. Users can also set the content direction such as top-to-bottom flow which controls how information appears on the label. A Reset Default button lets users quickly revert to the original settings if needed. On the right side, the Label Preview shows a live sample of the label design and the Test Print option allows users to print a sample label (e.g., quantity 1) to verify alignment and layout before finalizing. This feature is essential for customizing label appearance and ensuring compatibility with different printers and paper formats.

Step 4: Paper Setup

This feature allows you to fine-tune how your label content aligns with the physical paper by adjusting the paper margins top, bottom, left and right in inches. These settings help ensure that the printed labels are centered correctly and not cut off due to printer feed or paper edge issues. If your labels appear misaligned or shifted during test prints, tweaking these margins can fix the layout.

Step 5: Language Setup

This section allows users to select their preferred language from a dropdown menu, ensuring that the app interface and label content are displayed in a language that suits their business or regional needs. By choosing the appropriate language, merchants can streamline label creation for local markets, improve clarity for staff and maintain consistency across printed materials.

Step 6: Text Attributes Setup

This section lets you control which product attributes appear on the label such as SKU, price, currency symbol, compared-at price, product name, description, vendor and even custom text. You can check or uncheck each item to show or hide it and drag items up or down to change their display order. There's also an input field for adding personalized text. You can also adjust key text styling attributes for each line of your label. You can choose the font type (like Monospace), set the font size, apply text formatting such as bold, underline, or italic and control the text case (e.g., normal, uppercase). Plus, the wrap setting lets you manage how long text is handled whether it breaks into multiple lines or stays condensed.

Step 7: Barcode/QR/Alt Text Customization Setup

This feature lets you choose the type of code to display on your label like Barcode, QR Code, Text, or None depending on your product tracking or scanning needs. You can adjust the barcode width and height using sliders, select a barcode color by entering a hex code (e.g., #000000 for black) and define the barcode data type (such as barcode number or SKU). You can also choose what content appears below the barcode like the actual barcode data or product name. This Label Preview updates in real time to reflect your changes and the Test Print option allows you to verify the layout before saving.

Conclusion

Creating label templates in the Retail Force Barcodes & Labels app is easy and helps you make clear, professional labels for your products. By choosing the right paper brand or entering custom sizes, adjusting margins, setting language and customizing text and barcode details, you can design labels that fit your business needs perfectly. This not only saves time but also keeps your inventory organized and your labels consistent and easy to scan.
